The Durham community rallied around the 2014 Crayons2Calculators Fill that Bus effort to collect school supplies for teachers with total contributions topping $100,000, far above the $75,000 goal set for the project. More than 250 groups collected supplies with still other individuals donating directly to the Crayons2Calculators (C2C) warehouse or at special events held to collect supplies.
Fill that Bus was started by the four Durham Rotary clubs in 2011. Contributions increased from $5,000 the first year to $63,000 in 2013.
C2C executive director Julie Marshall commended Rotary, and the many other community volunteers who supported the school supply drive. “The Durham community has once again stepped forward with gifts of supplies that teachers and students need to make 2014-15 a great year. The teachers who ‘shop’ in our warehouse call this service a ‘lifesaver’ for them and their students. Every contribution to Fill that Bus will be used by teachers and students in schools with high free and reduced lunch populations. We are so grateful to all who made it a huge success,” said Marshall.
