Hurricane Matthew has left devastation and suffering in its wake and continues to create problems as floodwaters continue to rise and hundreds of people remain stranded.
In the United States, the storm is reported to have “killed at least 23 people as it churned across five states — six in Florida, three in South Carolina, three in Georgia, one in Virginia and 10 in North Carolina.”
The hurricane brought historic levels of rainfall to eastern North Carolina and has hit our state particularly hard. It has been reported that “more than 1,400 people have been rescued from floodwaters, and 2,600 people stayed in shelters overnight Sunday. “ Over a million people in central and eastern North Carolina are without power.
Significant damage has been reported in the Bahamas and more than 1,000 lives were lost in Haiti.
Our District is accepting funds to support recovery efforts in North Carolina, the Bahamas and Haiti. Funds designated for the Bahamas and Haiti will be sent to each Rotary District’s relief efforts, respectively.
If you decide you would like to make a contribution to this effort please make your check payable to District 7710 Charitable Foundation and write “North Carolina”, “Bahamas” or “Haiti” on the memo line to indicate which relief effort you would like to support. Your check can be mailed to PDG Rick Carnagua at 104 Frehold Court, Cary, NC 27519.
Thank you in advance for your generosity.
Yours in Rotary Service,
